FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE dataWeb Ships First Cross-Platform BDE-Compatible Database Engine with Single-File Support Aicha, Germany, 8/22/2002 dataWeb today announced TurboDB 4, a major update for its industry-strength database engine for Delphi, Kylix and C++ Builder. The new version features full Unicode support, multi-session and multi-threading capabilities and the ability to store all database objects within one single database file. These features enable TurboDB developers to build up-to-date Web Services and Web applications running under Windows/IIS as well as under Linux/Apache. "Now that Borland stopped the development of Borland Database Engine, a reliable, proven and compatible replacement is needed more than ever." said Peter Pohmann, president and CEO of dataWeb. "With TurboDB 4 dataWeb delivers a database engine, which can replace the BDE not only on the desktop but also in the Web. The field test has proven, that Web applications based on TurboDB 4 are not only ways easier to set up but are also much more stable." Beyond the three main new features Unicode, multi-threading and single-file databases, TurboDB 4 has undergone a general fresh-up, being now faster than ever and adding new data types for GUIDs and huge integers in addition to Unicode strings and Unicode memos. The lock file mechanism has been reworked, too, such that "dead" lock files will not prevent access any more. dataWeb has enhanced further the possibilities for import and export, it is possible now to export query result sets directly to TurboDB, dBase, MyBase (XML) or text files. TurboDB 4 contains five VCL/CLX data access components modeled after the original BDE components from Borland. TTdbTable and TTdbQuery are TDataSet descendants that implement all properties and methods of TTable and TQuery, so they can be used with all data-aware components on the market and with about 95% of existing source code for the BDE components. TTdbBatchMove like TBatchMove offers flexible data import and export routines and TTdbDatabase replaces TDatabase. The fifth component, TTdbEnumValueSet supports the unique enumeration data type available for TurboDB database tables. TurboDB offers multi-user access, all the normal data types including 32 bit integers, datetime, memos and blobs, encryption of table files, full-text indexing and searching, special fields to implement 1-to-many and many-to-many relations and an enumeration data type. The table files have an optimized proprietary file format to support the non-standard features. TurboDB is based on TurboDB engine which has been used by ten thousands of database developers mainly in Germany over the past years. TurboDB is the core component of all dataWeb development tools like TDB for DOS, Visual Data Publisher and dataWeb Builder. TurboDB is not only a fast and reliable relational database engine on Windows and Linux, it also provides for additional features like encryption, full-text indexing and special data types for linking database tables. TurboDB 4 supports Delphi 4, 5 and 6, C++ Builder 4, 5 and 6 as well as Kylix 1, 2 and 3. They are available as Standard Edition and Professional Edition, the latter including SQL support. Pricing is $325 for the Standard and $499 for the Professional Edition per platform. dataWeb is a leading provider of tools and components for database developers in Germany and world wide.
